THE AMERICAN DIET
I'm damn proud to be an American, land of plenty but is the land of plenty contributing to our over health? Recent studies are showing, yes indeed its affecting our health in a negative way. The angle with food manufacturers is they want us to come back and buy more. Their strategy is to make it appetizing and delicious and they'll come for more. At what cost, they will use every additive, preservative, salt and sugar to achieve their goal. That's where it stops. The preservatives and additives are chemicals to increase shelf life of products, BUT what are the side affects? headaches, aches and pains, rashes, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, agitation and a list of other side effects. In Europe, they buy their ingredients the same day, all natural. For our breakfast, lunch and dinner, our meals consist of lots of carbohydrates, pasta, white rice, white bread, all dairy products, etc.... Milk, the all American natural dairy beverage, everyone grew up on was designed for the calf, not man. Heard of being lactose intolerant? Then there is specially treated milk to help those that have the intolerance. Well, all these and more may e causing dementia, arthritis and all our doctors are giving us blood thinners, and advil An educated consumer is your best friend. Eat fresh, dark leafy vegetables, stick to seasonal, although the Global economy gives access to foods not seasonal, avoid them. Cut back on soda, all kinds even diet, emphasize flavored seltzer water with zero calories and sugar and avoid anything white in terms of carbos. and eat in moderation. You no longer have to eat everything on your plate and feel bloated. Avoif the chips that offer the crunch. You see, the following pairing is what food mfg'ers go by: salty and sweet spicy and hot crunchy Lastly, oil is good. In reality, it adds moisture to your skin and lubricates your joints. So, animal fat in moderation is good. Finally, try a supplement: Tumeric spice in capsule form, natural and helps relieve aches and pains. But there is 12 mg of calcium. 615 Baltimore Pike, Bel Air, MD 21014 Today I went to Miller's Ale House with my buddies to watch some Sunday Football. Got there at around 12:15 PM thinking it might be crowded as compared to weekday nights where there is about a 45 minute wait. Sunday wasn't a problem, they sat us right away, a good thing. I had come here with my daughter and it was ok, the food portions then was enormous. If you like enormous portions then this is the place to go. I on the other hand prefer tasty food of average portions. I ordered the tropical punch cocktail instead of beer. Now, I must confess that I'm not a drinker but the amount of alcohol in this drink was so strong, I ended up sipping the drink little by little barely, I know the establishment is banking on providing the best drinks but in my opinion, they went way over the top. Now there may be some that prefer it this way but I do not. I ended up getting a Diet Coke. All 4 of us shared the nachos as a shared appetizer. To me it was all thrown together and didn't appear to be fresh or it was microwaved and left sitting until pickup. The reason I say this because I ordered baby back ribs and it was cold. Complained to the server and they heated it up but the ribs were nothing to brag about. My friend ordered the chicken wings with old bay, 10 chicken wings, too much, he had left overs. His wife had a salad, it was 2 platters put together into 1 big platter, too much for her to finish. The bottom line is if you want a good selections of beer and drinks and enjoy surround TV's all over, this is the place. For us 4 friends, we could have shared the one salad, the chicken wings and the ribs and saved money. My rating is as follows: Staff: 2 stars Gave excuses as to why we didn't get the attention. That's not our concern, its management. Food: 1 star If you want enormous quantity then this is the place, but for us it was way too much and no flavor. Overall rating: 2 stars Chef Woo Can www.chefwoocan.com, www.chefwoocanmaryland.com, #Millersalehousereview Island Spice Jamaican Restaurant
2120 Emmorton Park Rd Edgewood, MD This might be a first. I went back to this restaurant for dinner. I had a fabulous lunch last Saturday. I was so impressed I wanted to try the dinner. After a tough day at work, all I wanted was to relax in a nice cozy restaurant and have a nice smile from the staff. For dinner, I had the 2 Jamaican meat patties. A little disappointed from last time, not flaky this time. The flavor was still there but the texture was not flaky. I reviewed the dinner menu. There was more of a selection that included curry goat, roti specials and a nice selection for dinner. I saw the shrimp coconut curry. Never had it before. I always believe to always try new dishes. Well, the dish came out, the shrimp was medium in size but I truly believe I received a good portion of shrimp, just enough to make the meal filling. The curry coconut sauce was just delicious, not to coconutty , just perfect. My palate detected a balance of coconut flavor and a slightly spicy curry sauce. Along with that was the rice and peas, sautéed cabbage, and a nice piece of plantain. There's nothing like spreading the rice over the sauce. It was that delicious. The shrimp was gently tossed with flour to seal the moisture of the shrimp but definitely scrumptious. For that hour and a 1/2 with my friend, I felt I was in Jamaica, the Jamaican tunes in the background, very nice. I highly recommend this place and have an appreciation of Carribbean food. Got to go back and try the Ox tail stew. Go and try this place, You'll be glad you did! No hamburgers or pizza or Chinese food. I wanted something different. My palate was craving something spicy yet savory. I heard about this restaurant and thought I'd give it a shot. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. As I drove up to the place I immediately got the feeling I was in Jamaica. Potted palm trees outside. Hmm, very interesting. Kind of tucked off the main highway of Rte 24. I entered the place and immediately appreciated the beautiful contemporary decoration. The place was very clean. The staff was very professional and courteous. The menu was simple on a rectangular shaped laminated menu. Very simple easy to read and selection was excellent. I went for lunch and included in meal was a fountain drink. I started with the meat patty and the special was 2 for $ 5.00 dollars. The size of these meat patties was well worth it. Flaky crust and spicy filling. Perfect! I then ordered the lunch special which I choose the chicken curry. Chicken curry is either a hit or miss, the meat is so tender it falls off the bone My chicken curry was prepared perfectly. The chicken just flaked off and the curry sauce was just the right amount. The lunch special came with peas and rice, a 1/4 piece of sweet plaintain and a sautéed cabbage. The special was just enough, not too much and not too little, a perfect portion, The atmosphere was peaceful and quiet., so if your looking for a place to relax and enjoy a good meal, then come to Island Spice. I give this restaurant 5 stars (excellent). I'm looking forward to going there for din din. Sorry they do not deliver. Chef Woo Can at www.chefwoocan |
