Restaurant Critic & Food Blogger
Tavern on the Bay, Somers Point, NJ.
For those that have followed my food critic blog, I have never ever written a poor restaurant review. There is one exception and Tavern on the Bay is the worst restaurant I have gone to in a very long time. Somers Point, NJ is the town prior to going to Ocean City, NJ. As you might know, I was on a well deserved vacation. Relaxing on the beach and eating good food until....... we went to Tavern on The Bay. It wasn't our first choice but when we weighed the fact that with other restauants, there was a 2 1/2 hr wait. Keep in mind we had kids that were hungry. We saw this restaurant and it seemed very nice, but once we step foot into the establishment, I wasn't even greeted with a smile. There must have been a bug up her butt!. Like she was doing us a favor seating us. There was no waiting lines but lots of empty tables. 1st warning: Summer resort, and not busy, excellent view of bay? Hmmmm. All evening, no lines and dining room wasn't even filled. (Keep this observance in mind). Ordered appetizers, I ordered Oyster rockefeller. These are suppose to be shuck fresh oysters with spinach and parmesano cheese melted over it when heated. Aaah, they were prepared and cooked a few hours ago. They were barely heated up. Eek! My wife decided to try the cream of crab bisque. I saw it on the menu and they did have a cup size but instead the waiter gave a very large bowl, way too much for my wife. he didn't mention to her there was a smaller version cup size. The waiter gave my daughter a bowl of the same soup! She's only 9 yrs old, Bad bad bad waiter! Then the entree, my brother and I ordered a 16 ounce rib eye steak medium. Now I am not a steak expert but I do know a rib eye is one of the most flavorful and tender steaks there are. What we got was a steak with no flavor and tough and chewy like eating leather! In this kind of establishment, you can't complain, my steak was rare, not even close to medium (a little pink), then th cook comes out? why? We just yes him to death and just wanted to get the hell out of there. Gave a poor tip and I was sooo pissed. Ok, remember when I said remember, beautiful view and empty tales in dining room, waiter giving a bowls of crab bisque designed for 3 people and leather rib eye. When you are a seasonal business, the Summer will make or break you to carry you over the Winter. The way they treated us as customers was poor. to sickening! Who cres about the view, next door there was a seafood shack where it was packed to the gills! They probably bought the cheapest grade of rib eye, not even "select" cut and charged us for a high quality rib eye. They saw us coming, the waiter couldn't wait to be our waiter with a party of 7. AVOID THUS RESTAURANT AT ALL COST. It makes sense that anyone that went there knew they got ripped off and told their friends and they told their friends and word got around that this is a terrible restaurant! I guess they didn't know about the course about customer satisfaction! Treat customers like shit and they'll pay in the end! For other review www.chefwoocan.com Recently I celebrated my birthday and my wife and daughter made reservations at Ruth Chris Steak House at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD.
I haven't been to a steak house in quite awhile but I have to say Ruth Chris Steak House is esquisite! If you want to feel spepcial, this is the place to go The decor is purely Southern as Ruth Chris started her business in Louisiana. Table seting is inpecable and the service is spectacular. Don't just go with the intention of just eating a great steak. You need to go to appreciate the overall experience! The menu was simple yet enticing with interesting new dishes offered for appetizers and dinners. I recommend the dinner special which includes your choice of salad. I chose the Caesar Salad. The rommaine lettuce was crisp and chilled with freshly sliced parmesan cheese and just the perfect touch of dressing. Not over bearing but freshly put together whereas some salads become wilty before it gets to the table. For the appetizer, I chose the Louisiana Seafood Gumbo. The presentation of the gumbo had cous cous centered on the plate while the waiter poured the perfet quantity of gumbo into my plate, just enough to tantalize my palate with a touch of hot and sweetness in the gumbo. Consistency was perfect, not watery or too thick. The entree, I chose a 16 ounce rib eye steak cooked medium. The flavor was natural and delicious and the texture of th steak was so tender and scrumptious like a rib eye should be. My side order was cream of spinach and it paired well with the steak. The sparkling water helped digestion but was sparkling. Yes, I could have chose a nice Cabernet Savignon but will do it on the next visit. The dessert was a let down, apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. if you've been working hard and want a relaxing and comfortable dining experience, I highly recommend Ruth Chris Steak House.
